Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is an FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) that is usually administered in combination with social counseling and behavioral therapy to help the patient achieve long-term recovery.

The unique benefits of buprenorphine include decreased cravings and withdrawal symptoms, greater safety in overdose compared to other opioids, reduced capacity for abuse, and its blocking or limiting effects produced by other opioids.

Sublocade®

Sublocade® is an extended-release injectable form of buprenorphine and is an excellent option for patients with Opioid Use Disorder. This special liquid medication is only administered once a month by a certified health care provider. Once Sublocade® is injected into the body, it turns into a solid gel called a depot. This depot will then release buprenorphine consistently at a controlled rate throughout the month until the medication runs out.

Naltrexone (Vivitrol®)

Vivitrol® is the extended-release injectable form of naltrexone, which is a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for Alcohol Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder. This treatment works best as part of a comprehensive recovery program that includes counseling and psycho-social support. This injectable medication is administered in the office by a healthcare provider. It is also available in an oral tablet formulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What should I expect at my first visit?

    • When you come to the office for your first visit, you will check in with our receptionist. You’ll be handed an iPad to fill out a variety of paperwork, including a general health history form and a HIPAA form. Any copay or deductible will be collected as well.
    • Our medical assistant will lead you from the lobby to the vitals room, where she will check your vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate. She will go over your current medications and allergies and will also ask a few questions about your substance use history. You will then be asked to provide a urine sample for a drug screen.
    • At this time, you will be ready to see one of our providers. The provider will ask about things like your medical history, home environment, and any history of treatment. They will also ask about your history of different substance use, such as:

                   -Opioids (heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone,
                    hydrocodone, methadone, morphine,
                    codeine, tramadol, etc.)

                   -Stimulants (Adderall®, Ritalin®,
                    crack/cocaine, methamphetamine,
                    etc.)

                   -Benzodiazepines (Xanax®, Ativan®,
                    Klonopin®, -Valium®, etc.)

                   -Alcohol

                   -Gabapentinoids (gabapentin,
                    Neurontin®, Lyrica®, etc.)

                   -Kratom

                   -Marijuana

    • Our providers are compassionate and will help make you feel as comfortable as possible – remember, we talk about this all day long with patients, we don’t judge! The provider will then discuss treatment options and along with your help, come up with a treatment plan. You will be provided with a variety of resources based on your needs and interests, including counseling, peer recovery coaching, meetings, and community support.
    • You will then check out at the checkout counter and schedule your next appointment. For a new patient, we generally see you back in one week to see how you are doing and monitor how the treatment plan is working. The goal is to gradually decrease the frequency of office visits to only once a month.

  • How often will I be seen?

    • We individualize care for each patient. We see patients anywhere from once a week to once a month.
  • What happens if I slip up or relapse?

    • We do not discharge patients from the practice due to illicit substance use. If someone is struggling with illicit substance use while in treatment, we want to provide more care, not less.
    • We follow a harm reduction principle and aim to meet patients where they are at in their recovery journey.
    • We promote honesty during office visits so we can individualize care.

  • Is treatment covered by my insurance?

    • Most commercial plans, Medicaid, and Medicare plans do cover treatment. You may be subject to copays and deductibles based on your insurance plan.
  • What if I don't have insurance or you don't accept my plan?

    • Our cash price is $165 for the first office visit and $120 for follow-up visits. If you don't have insurance, we will help you to find a pharmacy that has competitive prices.

  • How long will I be in treatment?

    • It is very patient specific.
    • For some people, treatment is indefinite. Others want to wean off of medications at some point during their recovery.

  • Am I required to be in counseling?

    • We do not require counseling or other forms of psycho-social support, but we strongly recommend it and have many resources for our patients.
  • How do I request refills of medications?

    • Refills for non-controlled medications can be requested through our Patient Portal. You can also call the office.
    • We kindly request 72 business hours for refill requests to be completed.
    • Refills for controlled substances typically require an office visit.
  • Can someone come with me to my appointment?

    • Absolutely. We encourage patients to involve family members, friends, spouses, etc. in their treatment if they would like.
  • Is there counseling on site?

    • Not currently. We have an extensive referral list for counseling and other forms of psycho-social support.
  • Do you see patients who are pregnant?

    • Yes. Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommend treatment with buprenorphine for pregnant people with an Opioid Use Disorder.
